Google's Core Web Vitals measure loading, responsiveness and visual stability. Here is what each one means and how to improve it.

Key takeaways

  • LCP measures loading, INP responsiveness and CLS visual stability.
  • Google assesses them from real visitors' experience, so test on real phones too.
  • Heavy images, scripts and late-loading content cause most problems.

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to describe how a page feels to real visitors. They are worth understanding because they track things your customers notice: whether the page appears quickly, responds when tapped and stays still while they read.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): loading

LCP measures how long it takes for the largest visible element, usually a hero image or headline, to appear. Google considers 2.5 seconds or less good.

Common causes of slow LCP: very large images, slow servers, render-blocking scripts and fonts, and hero images that load late because they are added by JavaScript.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP): responsiveness

INP measures how quickly the page responds visually after someone clicks, taps or types. Good is 200 milliseconds or less. INP replaced the older First Input Delay metric in 2024.

Poor INP usually comes from too much JavaScript running at once: heavy themes, page builders, chat widgets and tracking scripts competing for the browser's attention.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): visual stability

CLS measures how much content moves around while the page loads, the frustrating jump that makes you tap the wrong button. Good is 0.1 or less.

Typical causes: images and embeds without reserved space, banners injected at the top of the page, and fonts that change size when they load.

How Google measures them

The assessment is based on real visitors' data, looking at the 75th percentile of page loads over the previous 28 days. A page that feels fast on your office computer may still struggle on mid-range phones over mobile data.

Practical fixes

  • Compress and resize images, use modern formats and give images explicit dimensions.
  • Load the main image early instead of lazy-loading it.
  • Remove scripts you don't need and delay non-essential ones.
  • Reserve space for embeds, ads and banners.
  • Choose hosting that serves pages quickly, ideally through a CDN.

Frequently asked questions

Do Core Web Vitals affect rankings?

They are part of Google's page experience signals. Relevance and content quality matter far more, but a fast, stable site helps both rankings and conversions.

Where can I see my Core Web Vitals?

Google Search Console has a Core Web Vitals report based on real-user data, and PageSpeed Insights shows both real-user and lab measurements for individual pages.
